When your kids ask for a treat but you don’t want to fill them up with empty calories, try these quick & easy ideas. Even better, get them involved with creating them too! Here’s a small gallery of fun feast suggestions, ideal for little hands & tummies.
Apple Monsters! Slice a chunk out of a piece of apple to create a ‘mouth’, smear the inside with nut butter, stick in a piece of red fruit (like strawberry to create a tongue) and press in sunflower seeds or slivered almonds for teeth. The eyes are tiny dots of coconut yoghurt with a piece of raisin, the ears are pumpkin seeds.
Banana coins: Slice a banana, spread each ‘coin’ with peanut butter, add a wee dollop of melted dark chocolate & pop a piece of raspberry on top. Kids go “wow! yay!” & you get the award for being cool.
Easiest Gluten-Free Crackers Ever: Simply use a pair of scissors to cut shapes out of store-bought gf wraps or corn tortillas. Brush with olive oil, sprinkle with dukkah or spices of choice and bake in a moderate oven for 7-10 mins until crispy golden. So moreish! Another shot just below…
The kids & I made these crunchy Xmas trees by cutting pre-bought corn tortillas into shapes. We aimed for Christmassy colours by sprinkling red smoked paprika & green crushed pistachio…but alas, the green didn’t shine through very well! Still tasted great! These crackers store remarkably well in an air-tight container.
Kitty Cat Toast Transform regular breakfast toast into a visual feast by adding fruity features.
Watermelon Pizza: a fresh & fun way to serve up fruit! (kids love making this one. My daughter smothered her watermelon with coconut yoghurt, then layered fruit on top)
The Cutest Bear Cookies: next time you make cookies, try creating something a little different. These started out as gingerbread people, but then I used little rounds of dough to create ears, and the little bears were born. I loved the idea of them cuddling little nuts – someone said the almonds looked like rugby balls! For this batch of cookies, I used a lovely grain-free vegan recipe from Casey-Lee at ‘Live Love Nourish’, find her recipe here
Simple party food: dip fruit in dark dairy-free chocolate. Some of these strawberries have been dipped in coconut or crushed pistachios…
…and some of these kiwifruit slices have been sprinkled with freeze-dried berry powder.
Thanks for reading through these ideas, I leave you with this crazy kiwano!! x
